Just as we’d thought, the week dragged by as slow as anything. At school, Mrs Weaver kept giving us surprise spelling tests to keep us on our toes, as she put it – although we all reckoned it was out of sheer meanness. “She probably can’t think of anything else to teach us,” Kenny muttered darkly as, for the third day on the trot, more of the dreaded test papers were passed around.

I didn’t get any further with trying to solve the necklace mystery either – I drew a complete blank with Mum and didn’t know who else I could ask about it. The only good bit of news was that the thief seemed to have gone quiet as nobody else had anything stolen in the village. But as to who the thief was in the first place – well, that was another unsolved mystery that was bugging me to death!

There was definitely an enormous Sleepover Club sigh of relief when it came to Friday afternoon and Mrs Weaver said it was time to go home.

“Thank GOODNESS,” Fliss said, with great feeling. “I just couldn’t STAND any more tests or sitting still or trying not to think about treasure hunting for another second.”

“I know,” Kenny said, grabbing her coat off the peg and making a run for the door. “This week has just about driven me bonkers!”

We all felt the same. Not even the M&Ms, our two biggest enemies, ‘accidentally’ tripping me and Rosie up outside the school gates could wipe the smiles off our faces.

“Is that the best you can do?” Rosie said sweetly, brushing the dust off her skirt. “You’ll have to try a bit harder if you want to upset us, you know.”

“Yeah, you just wait until Monday,” I added with a smirk. “You’re going to be soooo gutted when you find out what we’ve been up to.”

THAT took the smirks off their faces, I can tell you.

“What are you on about now, Collins?” Emily sneered. “Living in airy-fairy land, are we?” She was trying to look like she didn’t care but I could tell she was really dying to know what we had got planned.

Kenny winked solemnly at them. “Top secret, I’m afraid. We could tell you – but then we’d have to kill you,” she said, then looked thoughtful. “Hey, that wouldn’t be so bad though, would it? Come on, Frankie, we’ll get Emily, the rest of you get Emma!” She was only joking, but as she made a dart towards Emily, both M&Ms screamed and started running down the road away from us.

All five of us burst out laughing at their frightened faces. “Diddums! Quick – get back home to Mummy!” Kenny bawled after them.

Ahhh… it’s always nice to have a little M&M moment to start off the weekend!

“I love winding those two up,” Kenny giggled contentedly, passing round a bag of jelly babies. “They are just so dumb; they’ll fall for anything you tell them.”

“It’s going to drive them mad, wondering what we’re up to this weekend as well,” Frankie said, biting a jelly baby’s head off with relish.
